The quiet leak

Most of your churn isn't due to customers leaving. It's due to failed payments.

Expired cards, hard declines, and blocked charges can leave a subscription cancelled or suspended under the radar. For most subscription businesses this involuntary churn is a large, recoverable slice of revenue that never shows up as a real cancellation, so it goes unnoticed and uncollected.

20–40%of churn is due to failed payments resulting in suspended subscriptions.
~8%of recurring card payments fail, and up to roughly 15% in some sectors.
~10%of subscribers are lost to failed payments every year.
27%of subscriptions are cancelled without customer awareness.

Do the math on your own book. At $50k MRR, even a 1% monthly involuntary-churn rate is about $6,000 a year quietly walking out, before you lift a finger to win it back. Recoura shows you your real number in minutes, then helps you recover it.

Ranges are from published 2026 subscription and payments benchmarks (ProfitWell, Recurly, Churnkey).

Where your processor stops

Recoura takes over when your payment processor has given up.

Stripe and Square both re-attempt soft declines automatically and they are often recovered. But when a customer's card is dead or hard-declined, that's where the real revenue loss happens.

Stripe & Square handle this

Soft declines

Stripe and Square auto-retry insufficient-funds, temporary-error, and try-again-later declines, and sometimes recover them.

They give up

Hard declines & expired cards

Recoura focuses on the revenue that goes uncollected: expired and lost cards, hard declines, and lapsed renewals.

Recoura recovers this

Revenue you can win back

Recoura discovers failed transactions, gives you the context and details, and helps you win them back automatically or with a personal touch.

Two ways to win it back

Full featured automatic or manual revenue recovery. You choose.

Most dunning tools give you one blunt instrument: automated email to everyone. Recoura gives you both modes and lets you decide.

Manual

Manual recovery

For the accounts worth a personal touch, Recoura routes failures to a user and provides everything they need.

  • A full breakdown summary: who, how much, why it failed, and transaction history.
  • A payment request prepared and ready: merchant-branded emails, and a fresh invoice link for the customer.
  • You review and authorize all email communications.
  • A Slack or Teams ping the moment an account's payment fails and notifies you immediately.
Automatic

Scheduled reminders

Recoura follows up on its own, on a cadence you set, until it's paid or the dunning sequence ends.

  • Runs on subscriptions and invoices only. One-off charges always stay with a user, so no customer is ever double-billed.
  • Our dunning engine is capable of sending up to five email reminders. You set the intervals and amounts.
  • Starts only after your processor's own retries are exhausted, whether that's Stripe's Smart Retries or Square's retry window. The two never overlap.
  • Stops the instant it's paid, and you can pause or resume any account's sequence with one click.
The Recovery Guard

Built-in subscription and invoice verification

Before Recoura takes any action, manual or automatic, the Recovery Guard checks each invoice or subscription against your live processor.

  • Live re-check on every send. The Guard reads current Stripe or Square state at the moment of action, not on stale data.
  • One live request per failure. A payment can only have one open recovery request, so there's no accidental double-billing.
  • Respects the processor's retries. If Stripe or Square is still working a soft decline, our dunning engine holds off.

FAQ

Your questions answered

How does connecting Stripe or Square work?

Through each provider's official OAuth flow, Stripe Connect or Square. You click Connect, approve access on the provider's own page, and you're in. Recoura never sees your password and never asks you to paste API keys. For Stripe we keep only a single account identifier, so no Stripe tokens are stored at all. Square requires an access token to read your data, so that token is stored encrypted at rest and never leaves our server. You can revoke access at any moment in Recoura's settings or straight from your provider dashboard.

I bill in more than one currency. Does that work?

Yes, and each currency is kept separately. Your revenue at risk, recovered revenue, and customer list are all held separately per currency, and you switch between them with one click. Currencies with no decimal places, such as the Japanese yen and Korean won, aren't supported yet.

What data does Recoura actually store?

As little as we can get away with. We keep a rolling 90 days of failed payments, a lightweight summary of your subscriptions (status and monthly value), and a log of the recovery actions taken on your behalf. Successful payments are read from your provider on demand and never stored, older records are pruned automatically, and card numbers never touch our servers at any point. They stay with Stripe or Square.

Who builds Recoura, and where?

Recoura is developed in the United States. The software is designed, written, and maintained here in the US. No offshore development shop, and no outsourced customer service.

Can Recoura move money out of my account?

No, and it can't be configured to. Recoura prepares and sends invoices through Stripe or Square. We hold no balances, initiate no transfers, and store no card details. Recoura's sole purpose is to recover lost revenue.

Could a customer ever be double-charged?

This is exactly what the Recovery Guard is for. Before anything sends, manual or scheduled, it re-checks the payment against your live provider. If it's already been paid, is still being retried, or has already been actioned, the dunning engine doesn't take action on it.

What happens the moment a customer pays?

Stripe or Square notifies us as soon as the payment clears and the recovery campaign is marked off as complete. Any scheduled reminders for that payment stop instantly, and if you've connected Slack, your team gets the good news in the channel of your choice.

What if I want to leave?

Disconnect from Recoura's settings or revoke access from your Stripe or Square dashboard, whichever you prefer. Either way our access ends immediately and the connection is forgotten (and any stored Square token is removed). Your account, your customers, and your billing carry on exactly as they were.
